Dual Redundant Mac Mini system

This system has two high-power Mac Mini’s running in parallel, with a single button that allows changeover of monitor, mouse, keyboard and MIDI from the main to backup computer (audio can be switched independently on the mixing desk, etc) in case of a software crash or hardware problem. A redundant system is the best solution on shows where the sound is a critical part of the performance.

Each Mac mini is installed with QLab Pro Audio v4, and Ableton 11 Suite. Each Mac mini is a quad-core i7 computer with 16GB RAM and a fast 256GB SSD. Audio is over Dante Virtual Soundcard, with a dedicated network for Dante, and a second isolated network for File Sharing and Screen Sharing. The system is provided with a monitor, mouse, trackball, keyboard, an 8-button Go Button, cables and a USB hub to allow everything to be connected 5m away from the rack. Add to this package with a Novation Launchpad, or BCF2000 fader control surface. The system is supplied in two cases: a 6u 19” shock-mounted rack, and a large Pali-style briefcase (containing the monitor, peripherals and cables).

The kit includes:

  • Two Mac Mini M2 Mac Pro’s with 16GB Ram, 256GB SSD hard drive with QLab v4 and v5 Pro Audio (Pro Video also available on request), Ableton 11 Suite, Dante Virtual Soundcard, MacOS 10 Ventura

  • KVM system

  • Cisco SG300-10 Network Switch for dedicated Dante network (which can connect to a fibre network for extra speed)

  • Netgear GS105 Network Switch for File Sharing and Screen Sharing (separating this on to a separate network reduces the change of network traffic affecting Dante audio)

  • A set of 5 metre cables to get from the rack to where you need the kit, with an 8-way mains block, a, 7-port powered USB2 hub (ideal for plugging in Launchpads, BCF2000’s, etc)

  • A dimmable USB light to plug into the USB hub

  • Dell 24”” 1920 x 1080 monitor (adjustable height, and can rotate between horizontal and vertical orientation), Apple mouse, trackball and keyboard

  • 5m MIDI Cable

  • 2 X 5m Cat5 Cable

  • 5M HDMI-DVI Monitor Cable

Control Surfaces

Novation Launchpad / Launchpad Pro

The Novation Launchpads are designed to work with Ableton Live, allowing fast triggering of clips and control over other parameters. They can also be used with QLab to create custom control panels for shows with complex triggering needs - for example using QLab to control a series of Looper devices in Ableton Live. The Launchpad Pro is similar to the Launchpad but has cables that provide a hardware MIDI output port.

Behringer BCF2000 motorised faders

The BCF2000 has 8 motorised faders that can control and mirror the fader positions in Ableton. This allows the operator to control Ableton, whilst also seeing changes in fader levels caused by other control software such as Ableton. Two BCF2000’s can be used simultaneously to control 16 channels of audio in Ableton. Having hands-on control of fader levels is particularly useful in rehearsals where sound is being improvised on-the-fly, or in devised shows where programming everything in advance isn’t possible.

£5 per week

Akai APC Mini

This mini control surface combines a mini Launchpad trigger surface with 9 non-motorised short-throw faders. It’s ideal for improvising in rehearsals.

Keith McMillen SoftStep 2

This is a foot pedal board with a series of pressure sensitive buttons on it, that can be customised to send out certain MIDI messages. It is silent in operation, unlike many pedalboards. It is perfect for onstage actor control for a looping system, for example, or for a musician. It sends MIDI over, and is powered by, USB. But an optional MIDI expander can be connected that converts the output to regular MIDI ports.

Extending and Sharing

DVI/HDMI KVM extender

Whilst you cn use Screen Sharing to control a Mac computer from a production desk, It is often preferable to have a directly connected keyboard, monitor and mouse. This can be achieved using a KVM extender (K=Keys, V=Video, M=Mouse), which allows a second set of these to be connected using a single Cat6 cable. The ADDERLink X-DVI PRO allows sharing up to 50m apart using a shielded Cat6 cable (providing a resolution up to 1900 x 1200). This system is suitable for use with all our QLab systems or any other devices which have a HDMI or DVI output. An additional mouse, monitor and keyboard is needed - it is best that the model of these match what is attached to the main computer.

This kit consists of:

1x ADDERLink X-DVI PRO KVM Extender - Local
1x ADDERLink X-DVI PRO KVM Extender - Remote
1x Cat6 cable, 50m, on drum
1x Neet 1:2 HDMI splitter
1x HDMI Cable - 5m
2x HDMI DVI cable

£35 per week

VGA KVM extender

The CE700 is similar to the DVI KVM extender above, but extends analogue VGA cables instead, at a lower resolution but over a longer distance using Cat5e or cat6 cable. Resolutions available are up to 1920 x 1200 at 60Hz over 30m; 1600 x 1200 at 60Hz up to 100m; 1280 x 1024 at 60Hz up to 150m. These can be used with any devices with a VGA output, or by adding a HDMI to VGA converter can also be used with out QLab racks. An additional mouse, monitor and keyboard is usually required - it is best that the model of these match what is attached to the main computer.

This kit consists of:

1x Aten CE700 KVM extender - Local
1x Aten CE700 KVM extender - Remote
1 x 30m Cat5, or 50m Cat6, or 125m Cat cable
2x VGA cable

£25 per week

USB extender

This allows a USB device, such as a Novation Launchpad, BCF2000, USB Go Box, Softstep pedal, or other USB device to be extended up to 100m away from the computer. It is fully USB 2 compatible. It is ideal for connecting a device onstage, or in the pit, to a computer at FOH.

This kit consists of:

1 x Icron Ranger 2104 USB extender - local
1 x Icron Ranger 2104 USB extender - remote unit with 4 port USB2 hub
1 x 30m Cat5, or 50m Cat6, or 125m Cat cable

£15 per week

MIDI extender and line driver

This allows two distant MIDI devices to communicate up to 500m apart over a standard Cat5 or Cat6 cable. They are ideal for connecting QLab to a Lighting desk or node, to send or receive MIDI to/from a lighting desk.

This kit consists of:

1 x Kenton MIDI LNDR extender - local unit, with power supply
1 x Kenton MIDI LNDR extender - remote unit, no power supply required
2 x 5m MIDI cables
1 x 30m Cat5, or 50m Cat6, or 125m Cat cable

£7.5 per week

USB Sharing Switch

The Aten US224 2 port USB sharing switch allows two computers to share the same USB devices, and to be swapped using a switch. This can be as simple as a printer, USB hard drive (Eject the desk first!), It’s ideal if you have a main and backup computer, each with a dedicated monitor, and you just want to swap keyboard and mouse control betwen the main and the backup. Or you could use it to swap a USB MIDI keyboard between a Mac and a PC without having to swap the cables around.

MIDI Control

MIDI power switcher

It can be useful to provide a light to the performer to indicate when their mic is on, and when it’s off, or to cue them.

The Canford MIDI AC Mains power switcher can receive MIDI (from QLab, for example, or from a Mixing Desk) to switch the mains power to any item connected to it on or off. This could be any domestic or professional light fixture. It could be used to cue someone, or to indicate that a certain microphone is live.
